Obituary for Alouette Kluge

Alouette was born in New York City in 1960 to Robert “Bob” and Mildred “Lee” Kluge. In 1970, Alouette and her family moved to Princeton NJ when Bob started teaching at the Institute for Advanced Study. She attended Princeton High School, ran track and took night classes at Princeton University.  After graduation, Alouette went to Radcliffe College, and was one of the first classes of women to graduate from Harvard University in Cambridge, Massachusetts. Alouette did a summer internship in the Democratic Republic of the Congo in Africa with the US State Department and worked one summer with Ralph Nader’s Public Citizen in Washington DC.

After graduating with honors in 3 years, she went to Tulane University in New Orleans to teach Political Science and Civics. Alouette graduated with her masters and PhD in International Relations at the prestigious School of Advanced International Studies at Johns Hopkins University. In 1988, Alouette began a career as an analyst with the federal government.

In 1990 she met David Melton. They married in 1991 and were blessed with their first son not long after. In the mid-1990s the family moved to Guam. Alouette was able to spend time with her parents in San Diego, California, not too far a commute from Guam. During their time in Guam they were blessed with two more children, Danielle and Jason, who were born in Encinitas, California at a hospital near the beach. In 1999 the family relocated to Maryland.

In the early 2000s Alouette began to struggle with health issues that led to an early retirement and she moved to California to help care for her parents, whom she loved dearly. Lee passed and later Bob did as well. These were difficult years for Alouette and she found comfort in the church. Recently, she relocated to Akron, Ohio to be closer her Kluge family. She started to build a new life for herself. Unfortunately, the isolation brought on by COVID added to her struggles and she succumbed to chronic illness. Dr. Alouette Kluge passed away on Tuesday, May 11th, 2021 at her home in Akron Ohio.

Alouette was a gifted thinker. She spent her life among experts and leaders and distinguished herself. She was well educated and had traveled the world. She was confident and insightful. She saw things no one else did and often years later her insights would prove accurate. She loved running and singing, meeting new people and exploring new cultures. She loved the beach. We are proud to have shared a part of our journey with her and will miss her dearly.
