Obituary for Nickolas G Barrera

Nick Barrera age 70 of La Porte, TX entered into eternal rest on Friday, February 4, 2022. He was born in Galveston, TX on April 13, 1951, at St. Mary’s Hospital (the first private hospital in Texas). He is preceded in death by his father Nickolas S. Barrera, Sr., his mother Emma G. Barrera, and his younger brother Dennis G. Barrera.

Nick entered the Army in 1971 and was stationed in Stuttgart, Germany where he met his wife, Brigitte, in the summer of 1973. They married months later (December 1973) in Houston, TX, and were happily married for 48 years. They have 2 wonderful children Nickolas and Cassandra, who were raised and attended school in La Porte.

Nick was a member of the Toastmasters International, and received several Awards for his public speaking and leadership skills. He was a land surveyor for many years, and started his own surveying business, which he operated from 1998 through 2008. He returned working on the Pipeline at the nearby plant, and finally retired in 2018. His hobbies include fishing and creating / sculpting beautiful art from pieces of driftwood. Nick served on the Planning & Zoning Board for the City of La Porte for many years. He was a member of St. Mary of the Immaculate Conception Catholic Church and the La Porte InterChurch Council. He will forever be remembered as a caring person who liked everyone he met.

He is survived by his loving wife, Brigitte, his son Nickolas, his daughter Cassandra & her husband Eric Quintanilla; grandchildren Nicholas Cruz & Emma Sunshine; siblings Ronald Barrera, Deborah & her husband Robert Pegram, Mary & her husband Kelly Reed, and Nannette & her husband Robert Kyle; numerous aunts, uncles, cousins, nieces, and nephews; and many friends.

The family would like to thank St. Luke’s Health Patients Medical Center and staff for all the efforts made in caring for Nick.
